-How and When did You start with this project?

We started this project about 3 years when Julian our guitarist came into possession of a friend’s mandolin. He then started to investigate bluegrass and an old mate from a previous band started learning the banjo, so they got together and formed Mustered Courage.

-How and Why did you start a Bluegrass band in Australia?

I guess it wasn’t a conscious desicion to start a bluegrass band specifically in Australia. We live here, we like bluegrass, we found the players and are convincing the Australian public that they might actually like this music.

- Its apreciated this kind of music in your Country? (I mean, this kind of music its more common to listen into the USA)

There is a relatively small fanbase of bluegrass appreciators here in Australia but since the likes of Mumford & Sons, suddenly the banjo is a regular instrument to see in young bands. This has given us the ‘foot in the door’ when it comes to winning over listeners that may never have listened to bluegrass before.

- What’s your favorite place to play? And why?

My personal favourite place to play is Wintermoon Festival in Queensland, Australia. The weather is perfect, the scenery is magnificent and it has a very strong community fell to it. The festival is only small but the talent of acts is huge and everyone in the festival is wearing a smile the whole time.

-If you colud choose an artist living or dead to play with , what one you choose?

Stevie Wonder!

-What do you find about the music industry right now?

About ten years ago when cd’s were still big and mp3’s were becoming more common, I was looking forward to a day when live music would come back to the forefront of the music industry. I don’t want to rely on selling music to make a living, i want to perform. And with the international economy the way it is, and with different ideas on the subject of owning music being brought up by streaming websites such as Spotify and such, there are more bands putting on shows and touring and hopefully, more people going to those gigs.

-Where can we find your music?

-What can we find in your lyrics?

How to distill moonshine, ghost stories, complaints from disgruntled workers, gunslinging family-fueds and trains, trains, trains!

-Are you planning coming soon to Europe?

We haven’t locked in any dates yet, but we certainly have our eyes set on european shores in the next year.

-Como y cuando empieza este proyecto?

Empezamos hace ya tres años, cuando Julian nuestro guitarrista se hizo con una mandolina de un amigo. Más tarde empezó a investigar sobre el bluegrass y un viejo compañero de una anterior banda empezó a aprender a tocar el banjo, así que se juntaron ambos y surgió Mustered Courage.

-Como y por que decidís hacer una banda de Bluegrass en Australia?

Supongo que no fue una decisión consciente de formar una banda bluegrass específicamente en Australia. Nosotros vivimos aquí, nos gusta bluegrass, encontramos a músicos y estamos convenciendo al público australiano que en realidad puede gustar este tipo de música.

-Es apreciado este estilo de música en Australia? (Quiero decir, que este estilo es predominante y casi exclusivo de los Estados Unidos)

Hay un pequeño sector de fans aquí de este tipo de música, pero desde la aparición de bandas como Mumford & Sons cada vez hay más bandas jóvenes que incluyen un banjo en sus bandas y eso nos ha dado pie a conseguir oyentes que antes no escuchaban bluegrass.

-Cual es vuestro sitio favorito para tocar y por que?

Personalmente mi sitio favorito para tocar es el Wintersmoon Festival en Queensland (Australia) el clima es perfecto, el paisaje es magnífico y tiene una comunidad de seguidores muy fuerte. El festival es pequeño, pero el talento de los actos que allí se hacen es enorme y todo el mundo en el festival lleva una sonrisa puesta todo el rato.

-Si pudieseis tocar con algún músico/banda…quien elegirías?

A Steve Wonder!

-Que pensáis sobra la industria musical actual?

Hace diez años cuando los albums (cd’s) todavía tenían tirón y los mp3 eran más comunes , me quedé con las ganas de que un día la música en vivo volvería a la vanguardia de la industria de la música. No quiero depender de las venta de álbumes para vivir, yo solo quiero tocar. Con la industria internacional se ha desarrollado la música en streaming, paginas como Spotify por ejemplo, gracias a ello cada vez hay más grupos tocando, haciendo tours y más gente en los conciertos.

-Donde podemos encontrar vuestra música?

-Que podemos encontrar en vuestras letras?

Cómo destilar alcohol ilegal, historias de fantasmas, las quejas de trabajadores descontentos, pistoleros de la feudo-familias y trenes, trenes, trenes!

-Podremos veros en Europa?

No nos hemos concretado fecha todavía, pero sin duda tenemos nuestros ojos puestos en las costas europeas en los próximos años.

-How and When did You start with this project?

Parlor Hawk started in 2010 when we released our first album: “Hoarse & Roaring”. The album was heavily folk influenced and very different from the music we are making now. Parlor Hawk started simply out of a need for an outlet for what we all love to do.

-What are your biggest influences into your music?

Some of our biggest influences are most likely the people we’ve been able to play shows with in the past few years, fellow musicians and friends, some well known, some obscure.

-What’s your favorite place to play? And why?

Anywhere there’s a willing ear. Sometimes the smaller shows end up being the most memorable, though its most likely the big shows, you never forget. Its always a treasure playing in our back yard, Utah and California. We have a lot of really dedicated, loving fans in those places, and it always feels like we are home. We played a week of shows in Singapore, which also felt much like home.

-If you colud choose an artist living or dead to play with , what one you choose?

John Lennon. It’s hard to think of musician who’s made a more lasting effect on the art form of pop culture music than John Lennon.

-Your lyrics …what are they speaking about?

Things that are happening around us. The people we meet, the things we experience, the emotions we feel. Our lyrics are centered around being present, witnessing, experiencing, living, loving and dying.

)COMO Y CUANDO EMPEZÁIS ESTE PROYECTO?

-Parlor Hawk empezo en el año 2010,cuando lanzamos nuestro primer álbum ‘Hoarse & Roaring’. Este álbum tuvo una importante influencia folk ,muy diferente al estilo de música que hacemos ahora. Parlor Hawk surgió por la necesidad de hacer las cosas que nos gustan.

)CUALES SON VUESTRAS MAYORES INFLUENCIAS?

-Algunas de nuestras influencias son las personas con las que hemos tocado en los últimos años, otros son músicos y amigos, algunos de ellos muy cercanos.

)VUESTRO LUGAR FAVORITO PARA TOCAR, Y POR QUE?

-En cualquier lugar donde haya un oído puesto, a veces los conciertos pequeños terminan siendo los más memorables,incluso más que los grandes,nunca se olvida. Siempre es un tesoro tocar en nuestra zona , Utah & California, allí tenemos un montón de fans realmente queridos que siempre nos hacen sentir como en casa. También hemos tocado un par de conciertos en Singapur y también nos hicieron sentir como en casa.

)SI PUDIESEIS TOCAR CON CUALQUIER MÚSICO O BANDA, CUAL SERIA Y POR QUE?

- John Lennon , es difícil pensar en un músico que haya causado un gran efecto en el arte de la música pop que no sea John Lennon.

)DE QUE HABLAN O TRATAN VUESTRAS LETRAS?

- Tratan sobre cosas que han sucedido a nuestro alrededor ,gente a la que hemos conocido,experiencias,emociones que sentimos. Nuestras letras se centran en estar presente, ser testigo, experimentar, vivir, amar y morir.

We have some questions to the Australian singer/songwriter. / Tenemos algunas preguntas para el cantautor Australiano.

-What’s your favorite place to play? And why?

its not so much as where but when an audience is eagerly ready to listen to the show. I would find it too hard to pinpoint one country. for when it happens your on a trip with them past boarders and language.

-If you colud choose an artist living or dead to play with , what one you choose?

Jim Morrison and the doors. i would play the triangle or anything for that matter to share a stage where they destroyed the stage.

- How do you start to play music?

when i step on stage i push and force my mind to a medeative state for it to take over . or when you feel a pulse of inspiration you jump at a pen or instrument as soon as possible.

-Your influencies are…?

1950’s blues, 60’s revolutionist writers, 70’s rockers, 80’s punk, 90’s gunge, 00’s anthems, at the moment chilly gonzales.

- What are you trying to say with your lyrics?

Release as an album is a focus on how the importance of letting go . the breaking of old laws ,boarders and boundries that have held the physical,spiritual and emotional that creates a person. the release of fears. like holding a stone in your hand and no matter how much you want to stay in your own bubble. arcing back and with all your might release that stone of everything you know with it. to leave yourself with an open heart for the constant change that brings in each day and accept it moves through you for to capture new truths.

-Are you planning to come to Spain soon?

at the first chance i get! fingers crossed sooner rather than later.

-Cual es tu lugar favorito para tocar?

*No importa el lugar , más bien , la audiencia que esta esperandote para escuchar el concierto , me resulta difícil señalar un solo país.

-Si pudieses escoger un artista o banda para tocar junto con el/ella , a quien escogerías?

*A Jim Morrison y a The Doors. Me gustaría tocar el triangulo o lo que fuese para poder compartir el escenario que destrozaron.

-Cómo empiezas a tocar/componer música?

*Cuando estoy en el escenario , me obligo y fuerzo a mi mente a un estado meditativo para llevarlo a cabo , o cuando salta la inspiración y tienes un bolígrafo cerca o un instrumento lo antes posible.

-Cuales son tus influencias?

*El Blues de los años 1950 , escritores revolucionarios de los 60 , Rockeros de los 70 , el punk de los 80 , el grunge de los 90 , los exitos del 2000 y actualmente Chilly Gonzalez.

-Qué quieres decir con tus letras?

*Release es un album que da importancia al dejarse llevar , la ruptura de las costumbres pasadas o leyes pasadas , la física, espiritual y emocional que crea una persona , la liberación de los miedos , como coger una piedra con tus manos , y que no te importe estar en tu propio mundo…

-Planeas venir pronto de tour por España?

*Cruzo los dedos! En la primera oportunidad que me surga , espero más pronto que tarde!

Al rededor de las 23.15 h cuando salio Noel Gallagher con sus High flying Birds y allí estaba yo , rodeada de británicos esperando ver al ex-miembro de Oasis. La verdad es que al verlo en directo me hice la pegunta del millón , ¿Porqué no se reunen de nuevo? , no es que no disfrutara de los temas de su álbum en solitario ”Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds” temas ’If i had a gun…’ , es que quieras o no , te entra la melancolía , y más al cantar temas de su vieja escuela como ‘Whatever’ , donde todos cantamos , hasta el menos fan de los Oasis o del propio Noel , o su última canción del set-list , un regalo que hizo a todos los fans de Oasis ‘Don’t look back in anger’.

Añado un par de fotos , que hice en el concierto.

Arround 23.15 pm was when Noel Gallagher was in action with his High flying Birds , and then , i was too , surrounded by british people waiting for his ex-Oasis idol , when i saw him , i wonder to myself , a typical question , the most desired question ‘When they could get back together?’ , it’s not about that i did not enjoy his solo album ”Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds” (i did , with ”If i had a gun…’ and more) , it’s because melancholy comes , easy , if he was playing songs like ‘Whatever’ (on everybody was singing) or the gift for Oasis fans ‘Don’t look back in anger’ to say goodbye.

Pues eso me ha ocurrido a mi esta noche , en la fiesta de la primavera en Murcia , escuchando a Lourdes , más conocida bajo el nombre de Russian Red , la plaza Estrella estaba repleta de gente deseosa de la magia y dulzura que fluye en la voz de Lourdes . Russian Red nos regalo temas de su reciete álbum ‘Fuenteventura’ : Everyday Everynight , The Sun The Trees o su ya conocido Cigarretes de su álbum anterior ‘I love your glasses’ o el tema que puso BSO a la película Habitación en Roma : Loving Strangers.

Well , that happened to me tonight, in the spring festival in Murcia, listening to Lourdes, better know under the name Russian Red, the gig was amazing , full of people waiting for her sweet tone and magic songs , Amazing songs from his new album ‘Fuenteventura’ like : Everyday Everynight , The Sun The Trees , or his popular hit Cigarretes of her last album ‘I love your glasses’ or Loving strangers , that became as soundtrack for ‘Room in Rome’ movie.

$Hoy , os traigo una entrevista online con el dúo Canadiense ‘Army Girl’ formado por Carmen Elle & Andy Smith. Probablemente no hayáis oído hablar mucho de este grupo , pero deberiais hecharle un vistazo! (Versión Española) (Below this you will find the interview in English) *Como comenzó este proyecto? -Carmen : Nos conocimos hace cuatro años , cuando ambos teníamos otras bandas . Después de conocernos el uno al otro y admirar lo que el otro tocaba , al fin de unos años acabamos tocando juntos. -Andy : Carmen se reunio conmigo y con una banda en la que yo estaba en el 2007 . Hicimos juntos una cover de ‘Feist’ y la tocamos más tarde , esa misma noche. Si no recuerdo mal , su mano izquierda estaba rota , ella estuvo tocando con la mano fracturada. *Por qué os decidis por ser un dúo? -Carmen : El estilo de comenzar como un dúo es muy atractivo, es muy basico , muy lineal . Puede ser difícil porque los dos tenemos que hacer un poco más para nivelar las canciones, a veces, pero también se siente mejor. Más inmediato. Todo lo que queremos hacer, se puede hacer solo sin pensar. Las bandas con más miembros tienen más problemas de programación , demasiadas personas muy ocupadas tratando de hacer música juntos. - Andy : Lo mismo que ha dicho Carmen , para mi ser un grupo de 2 es muy atractivo . We put together a Feist cover and played it later that night. If I remember correctly, her left hand was broken. She played guitar with a broken hand. *Why are you a duo band? -Carmen: The style of being a two piece is very appealing. It’s very basic, very linear. It can be challenging because we both have to do a little bit more to flush out the songs sometimes, but it also feels better. More immediate. Anything we want to do, we can just do without thinking. Bands with more members have more scheduling problems-too many busy people trying to make music together. -Andy: What Carmen said. To me, a 2 piece is very attractive. And for the musicians, it’s also very attractive. It’s not like being a solo artist— there’s always someone there to share ideas with.. And yeah—not as complicated to make plans as it is in a 4+ member band. *What about your influences? -Carmen: Land of Talk, St. Vincent, Kurt Vile, Fleetwood Mac, Sondre Lerche, my friends and peers. -Andy: Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Adele… she’s really good. Also, Fleet Foxes, The Drums, Moon King, and The Dead Weather. The list goes on… Coffee. Love. Food… *If you could play with any musician … who would you choose? -Carmen: Bjork *The best place to play…and why? -Carmen: Massey Hall- it’s the best sounding room in North America. -Andy: …I’ve never played at Massey Hall. But I assume Carmen is right about that. So far the best show we played was probably our CD release at a little place in Toronto called Double Double Land. Our first headlining show. I’d play there again anyday. *What you try to say with your lyrics? -Carmen: At first it seems as though I write a lot about fear and loneliness. But what I really write about it the struggle to survive. -Andy: Carmen got together with me and a band I was playing in back in 2007. We put together a Feist cover and played it later that night. If I remember correctly, her left hand was broken. She played guitar with a broken hand.

*Why are you a duo band?

-Carmen: The style of being a two piece is very appealing. It’s very basic, very linear. It can be challenging because we both have to do a little bit more to flush out the songs sometimes, but it also feels better. More immediate. Anything we want to do, we can just do without thinking. Bands with more members have more scheduling problems-too many busy people trying to make music together.

-Andy: What Carmen said. To me, a 2 piece is very attractive. And for the musicians, it’s also very attractive. It’s not like being a solo artist— there’s always someone there to share ideas with.. And yeah—not as complicated to make plans as it is in a 4+ member band.

*What about your influences?

-Carmen: Land of Talk, St. Vincent, Kurt Vile, Fleetwood Mac, Sondre Lerche, my friends and peers.

-Andy: Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Adele… she’s really good. Also, Fleet Foxes, The Drums, Moon King, and The Dead Weather. The list goes on… Coffee. Love. Food…

*If you could play with any musician … who would you choose?

-Carmen: Bjork

*The best place to play…and why?

-Carmen: Massey Hall- it’s the best sounding room in North America.

-Andy: …I’ve never played at Massey Hall. But I assume Carmen is right about that. So far the best show we played was probably our CD release at a little place in Toronto called Double Double Land. Our first headlining show. I’d play there again anyday.

*What you try to say with your lyrics?

-Carmen: At first it seems as though I write a lot about fear and loneliness. But what I really write about it the struggle to survive. To survive with yourself, to survive in a world that doesn’t always align itself with your interests and desires.

*Are you planning to come soon to Europe?

-Carmen: We would love to come to Europe in the summer time but we don’t know when we will be there for sure.

-Andy: We definitely plan to go to Europe. But nothing is set in stone right now.

Buenas! , Ayer estuve en el Auditorio ‘El Batel’ ,Cartagena , nada más ni nada menos , que para ver a uno de los grupos que más me gustan , los señores de Seattle , Fleet Foxes , a parte , le acompañaban otro grupo de USA (San Francisco), Vetiver , estos ultimos tocaron como teloneros , regalandonos temas como ‘Wonder Way’ o ‘Everyday’ , el turno de Fleet Foxes , no por ser una fan de ellos digo esto , pero , sonaron increibles , todas las voces en armonia , la percusion perfecta , los acordes… todo , me gusto mucho más el sonido en directo que el sonido de los albumes (‘Fleet Foxes’ , ‘Helplessness Blues’ ) tocaron más de 1 hora de concierto , con un juego de luces simple , pero magico y epico , te hacian sentir en otro planeta , puede sonar tonto , pero es asi jeje , tocaron temas de sus dos trabajos de estudio ‘Your Protector’ , ‘White Winter Hymnal’ , ‘Battery Kinzie’,o ‘Mykonos’ entre muchos más exitos de la banda. Para esa gente que no ha podido ir a verles o no conocen a la banda , os recomiendo totalmente verles en directo cuando caiga la oportunidad , es imprescindiblemente melomano.

Por cierto , subire pronto algun video.

Hi there! Yesterday i was on the Auditorium ‘El Batel’ , Cartagena (Spain) , to see one of my favourites bands at the moment , the lords of Seattle , Fleet Foxes , accompanied like a guest band another USA band from San Francisco , Vetiver , this one giving us songs like ‘Wonder Why’ or ’Everyday’ as example , on the turn to Fleet Foxes , not becouse i’m fan of they i have to say kind words for them , but …it’s impossible for this reasons : They played better than the albums , (‘Fleet Foxes’ , ‘Helplessness Blues’ ) , super quality sound , all of his voices in armony , all the percussion , all the chords , also they played with an awesome and simple but epic lights on the screen , they make me feel like if i was in another world , a perfect world plenty of woods , and green screens , that can sound creepy , but it’s true hehe . Also they played arround more than one hour of music , songs of his albums like ‘Your Protector’ , ‘White Winter Hymnal’ , ‘Battery Kinzie’, or ‘Mykonos’ . For all the nu-folk lovers that have not yet seen them live, i would to recommended this show , a lot!
